Don't want to start a useless discussion about firmwares, but just know if anybody know when Motorola is going to release an update for the Z8. Of course, apart a "as soon it is ready" answer
Motorola haven't said anything publicly about a new firmware yet, but to be honest this isn't surprising.
Some sources indicate that there is a new firmware being readied at the moment, but which networks are going to get that firmware, and whether it will be made available OTA or as a download, isn't yet confirmed.
The Z8 supports both user-installable (downloadable) and OTA (over the air) firmware updates. Motorola have hinted that OTA is probably not yet ready, but user-installable firmwares should not be a problem, as Sendo have been doing them for years!
I hope really soon because in my opionion 90% of the stability issues (THE biggest probem in my opinion) are there because of the poorly tested and immature operative system. I find pratically impossible to use the phone whitout being sure it's going to crash for any reason. I know that new smartphones can have problems, and i can understand it even more in this case, but virtually any feature "media" related (photos, video, music) can freeze or crash the phone in any moment. And for a "Media Monster" it is just ridicolous.
It's been suggested to me (very un-officially) that there is indeed a firmware update due, but I still don't have any official word on this, or any dates.
I suspect a lot more will become clear after the Smartphone Show in a couple of weeks time.
Stuart - any idea if this rumoured firmware update is just going to be bugfixes or if they're actually going to be making improvments? In other words, is this update something to get excited about?
I can't help but worry that it's only going to be bugfixes and that we're basically stuck with what we've got in terms of features and usability, particularly now that the Z10 is in the pipeline. It would be nice to think that the Z8 and Z10 firmwares shared the same codestream (meaning the Z8 gets any firmware improvements the Z10 has) but I'll beleive that when I see it.
I can answer some of those questions from what I know; some from what I think; and none from what I haven't been told unofficially...
I would suspect that the main content of the next firmware will be bug fixes for the known problems with the Z8. Changing how the UI / phone works is more than just a firmware update, it involves changing UIQ itself.
The Z8 and Z10 (please remember that the Z10 hasn't even officially been announced yet) will share the same codebase, at least at the basic level. It's expected that the Z10 will be based on Symbian 9.3 and UIQ 3.2, which is an upgrade from the Symbian 9.1 and UIQ 3.1 used on the Z8. However, the hardware in the Z8 and Z10 is bound to be very similar, if not identical, so it's very likely that the Z8 will be upgradable to UIQ 3.2 via a firmware update.
I don't know what functionality changes willl be made with the next firmware / Z10; but I would expect to see a lot of the Z10's features filter down to the Z8, which is NOT going to stop being sold once the Z10 is out.
Are there some news about updates for Z8 ? Because default firmware, is little annoying, and it like sometimes to freeze. Also I want to ask about some mods for phone ? Are there any ? I mean modified firmwares, or something like that, with some improvements.
There's no FOTA updates available publicly. What the video shows is someone with access to Motorola's internal testing server using that to download a firmware update.
No "consumers" or public have access to this server
True. I've tryed FOTA a couple of times now. Everytime the same message: sychronisation not possible at this time. (or something like that, my message is in dutch)
It's about time that they do something with the software, before i really lose my patience and throw the damnn thing in the ocean.
Really of all the phones i had in the past, i've never seen such crappy support.
