UIQ 3.2 information revealed
With the official launch of the Motorola Z10, UIQ have lifted the lid on UIQ 3.2, the OS / UI combination which runs the Z10. UIQ 3.2 is an incremental update to 3.1, seen on the Moto Z8 phone, and runs on Symbian OS 9.2. Read on for details of the changes and what they mean for the Z10.

Below is the official information about UIQ 3.2, taken from the UIQ website. Essentially what it means for the Z10 phone is:

  • Integrated instant messaging application

  • New "MMS Postcard" application to print multimedia messages

  • Push email support for Exchange and other server environments

  • An updated web browsing experience

UIQ 3.2, the latest release of UIQ, is focused on enhanced support for network operator services, such as Instant Messaging, MMS Postcard, and Consumer Push Email. UIQ 3.2 is based on Symbian OS v9.2 and is available for UIQ Technology Licensees and Partners. Developers do not need a new SDK to develop for UIQ 3.2.

Rich Messaging suite
New features have been added to the UIQ messaging suite and its design has been improved: MMS postcard, one of the new applications that meet operator requirements, allows the user to send an image from the phone as a printed postcard. An Instant Messaging (IM) client is provided for chatting with friends and for viewing their on-line status information. The IM client supports the OMA IMPS 1.2 specification and enables communication with other IM clients such as MSN and Yahoo. OMA E-Mail Notifi cation 1.0 standard offers operators the possibility to provide their customers with a push email solution.

New API's including Java MSA subset and push email
UIQ 3.2 is compliant with the Java MSA Subset (JSR-248). With this set of API's, developers can create a wide range of media-capable applications. The release includes push email API's, independent of email protocol, which enables integration of third-party email clients with UIQ messaging and making them appear as native applications.

Enhanced media experience in the web browser
The media experience in the web browser has been improved by adding support for enjoying and sharing media, for example by support for streaming video, the option to preview content before purchasing, the possibility to view or listen to content before the download is completed. For more information about the release, please see the UIQ 3.2 product documentation.
