As reported by All About Symbian and others, UIQ has filed for bankruptcy. "There are no opportunities to create a
new line of business in the current financial climate," UIQ Chief
Executive Johan Sandberg told Reuters.

In a move which has been fairly well expected since Sony Ericsson and Motorola killed off their future UIQ phones; all remaining UIQ staff have now effectively been made redundant, with Sony Ericsson only agreeing to fund the company on a month - by - month basis. UPDATED: As originally reported by Mobile Phone Development blog, Motorola have dumped UIQ (and Java-Linux) and will not be producing any more UIQ based phones. Motorola will focus on Android, Windows Mobile, and own P2K
platform for low-cost handsets. Will no longer support Symbian UIQ or
own Java-Linux platform. Consolidation of platforms should reduce
expenses on OS development." |

In a "keep the developers thinking we care at all costs" move, SonyEricsson have just announced that their first Symbian Foundation based phone will be available in the second half of 2009 (Q3 2009). And the good news is you can develop for it now, using the, um, S60 SDK :-) |
